In 2001 before the attacks of 9/11, approximately 4,000 Sudanese Lost Boy and Girl refugees arrived in the United States.  As victims of genocidal (un)civil war which has raged in Southern Sudan for over twenty years, they have spent the majority of their lives in refugee camps of Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.  Since the ages of 3 to 7, the tides of war have forced them to flee as groups of children through the deserts on thousand mile treks.  Most have lost their parents and siblings, having seen them perish or killed before their eyes.  They have survived war, thirst, starvation, and personal loss that has scarred their souls but never beat them.  Now in their early twenties, the Lost Boys and Girls living in the United States embody the hope for their country’s future.  Most are attending college while working several jobs to support their family members left in the camps.  It is their hope that through their education, they will gain the knowledge and means to rebuild their country and save the lives of their loved ones left behind.

The Dynamic of the US , Sudan and China (what you will not hear on the nightly news owing to our government’s shame). What you can do….

1)      China has been supplying arms and helicopter gunships to the Sudanese government to keep the genocide in Darfur raging and limit competition for Sudanese oil.  They are the largest purchaser of Sudanese oil.  China promotes the genocide to keep other countries from dealing with Sudan . They build the oil infrastructure and pump the oil they then purchase in a market with almost no competition.

2)      Only a few years ago, our country had a surplus of money and there were laws with said we must keep a balanced budget.  Now we are in a state of enormous and ever-growing debt, with China as our second largest financier.  China is the second largest investor in US Treasuries and the Asian bloc is the largest.  If China stops purchasing our treasuries, our economy will grind to a halt; if they sell our treasuries, our economy will crash. We have not intervened in the Sudanese genocide for fear of offending China .

3)        China is on the UN Security Counsel and prevents the UN from imposing any sanctions against the Sudan . This is why the US must take a lead position to stop the genocide.

In Darfur ( Western Sudan ), Sudanese Government helicopter gunships shoot down every living, moving target. Government planes drop their bombs. Arabs on camel and horse-back come in and finish the job by terrorizing and murdering any villagers left and burning their homes. They then throw their victims bodies down wells to spoil their only source of water. Arab soldiers are ordered to commit systematic gang rapes of all Darfurian women so they will not only suffer from that assault, but become outcasts of their tribes and pregnant by their Arab rapists.

And the genocide goes on, and on, and on while the US is hamstrung by its ever-growing debt to China . Our Government needs to act to stop the genocide in spite of our economic fears. Anything less is immoral.
